What
would you send him?
When
men are fighting in a war, their families are usually asked to keep in
touch through letters and postcards but are also asked to send regular
ration packs that contain practical and, if possible, luxury items. The
aim of commercial companies during wartime therefore, was to sell their
product by ensuring that advertisements showed the product as an essential
addition to any man's ration pack. During wartime the imagery in advertisements
took on the theme that life on the front line was difficult but could
be made easier with a certain product.
This section asks
the students to think about what may be an essential item, what may be
a luxury item and what would they send in a package to the front line.
The stimuli are various World War One adverts printed in newspapers during
1916 and 1917 and an article about what to send as a gift.
