EN1 Speaking and listening
Speaking
Speak fluently and appropriately
in different context, adapting their speech for a range of purposes
and audiences. (1)
The censorship workshop requires
students to present their papers and read aloud their censored article.
Group
discussion and interaction
Most of the activities in
this theme require paired or group work. In these cases students will
(2a) make different types of contributions to groups, (2b) take different
roles in the organisation, planning and sustaining of groups.
Drama
The students will participate
in a range of drama activities, (2a) use a variety of dramatic techniques
to explore ideas, issues, texts and meanings. Hot seating is one device
that the students will experience in the 'Letters home' activity.
Language
variation
With the advert activity
the students will explore (6f) the development of English comparing
language in adverts from 2001 and 1916/1917.

Composition
Writing to persuade, argue,
advise, (1i) develop logical arguments and cite evidence ('Fought and
fell' activity), (1j) use persuasive techniques ('Adverts' activity).
History
Historical
interpretation
Through the censorship workshop
the students will explore (3a) how and why historical events and situations
have been interpreted in different ways, (3b) evaluate interpretations.

Enquiry
In all activities pupils
will be able to (4a) identify a range of appropriate sources of information
as a basis for independent historical enquiries, (4b) evaluate the sources
used.
Breadth of
study
Pupils will be required in
the censorship activity and the advert activity to look at (7b) history
from a variety of perspectives.
Citizenship
Knowledge and
understanding about becoming informed citizens
The significance of media
in society (1h). The censorship activity will allow students to reflect
on the purpose and responsibilities of newspapers during World War One
and in today's world.
