English

EN1 Speaking and listening

Speaking

To speak with confidence in a range of contexts, adapting their speech for a range of purposes and audience. (1)

Many of the actives encourage speaking but in particular 'censorship' requires presentation skills and 'Fought and fell' encourages poetry reading.

Group discussion and interaction

To talk effectively as members of a group, (3c) qualify or justify what they think after listening to other questions and accounts, (3e) take up and sustain different roles, adapting them to suit the situation.

Drama

To participate in a wide range of drama activities, (4a) create, adapt and sustain different roles, individually and in groups, (4c) use dramatic techniques to explore characters and issues hot seating with 'Letters home'.

Language variation

Pupils should be taught about how language varies (6a) according to context and purpose.

This can be clearly demonstrated in 'Letters home' and the advert activities.

En2 Reading - Knowledge, skills and understanding

Literature

To develop understanding and appreciation of literary texts, (4f) consider poetic forms and their effects, (4g) express preferences and support their views by reference to texts.

Non-fiction and non-literary texts

To develop understanding and appreciation of non-fiction and non-literary texts (5b) identify words associated with reason, persuasion, argument, explanation, instruction and description.

This objective can be achieved when the students investigate the adverts and the language in the letters, (5f) evaluate different formats, layouts and presentational devices. The adverts and censorship activities are particularly good for this objective, (5g) engage with challenging and demanding subject matter.

Non-fiction and non-literary texts

The range should include (9a) letters, (9b) print and ICT-based reference and information materials, (9c) newspapers, articles and advertisements.

En3 Writing

Breadth of study

The range of purposes that this theme offers are (9a) to imagine and explore feelings and ideas, focusing on creative use of language and how to interest the reader, (9c) to persuade, focusing on how arguments and evidence are built up and language used to convince the reader.

Information and communication technology

Breadth of study

Through using the Children's Zone, pupils will be able to work with others to explore ICT tools (5b).

History

Historical interpretation

Pupils should be taught to recognise that the past is represented and interpreted in different ways, and to give reasons for this (2). All the activities in the Teachers' Zone are able to meet this objective.
