YEAR 3, TERM 1

Text level work:

Reading comprehension

To distinguish between rhyming and non-rhyming poetry and comment on the impact of layout in the activity 'Fought and fell' (7).

To express their views about a story or poem, identify specific words and phrases to support their viewpoint through looking at the poem published in a World War One newspaper in the activity 'Fought and fell' (8).

YEAR 3, TERM 3

To read examples of letters written for a range of purposes in the activity 'Letters home' (16).

YEAR 4, TERM 1

To understand and use the terms fact and opinion and to begin to distinguish the two in reading and other media. This can be achieved in the censorship activity (19).

To identify the main features of newspapers including lay-out, range of information, voice, level of formality, organisation of articles, advertisements and headlines. This is achieved through the adverts and censorship activities (20).

Writing composition

To write newspaper style reports in the censorship activity and with adverts (24).

YEAR 4, TERM 3

Reading comprehension

To read compare and evaluate examples of arguments and discussions. e.g. letters to press articles. This can be achieved through using all the activities in 'What would you send him?' and 'Impressions of war' (16).

From examples of persuasive writing, to investigate how style and vocabulary are used to convince the intended reader. 'Enrol Today' is an activity that encourages persuasive writing (18).

To evaluate advertisements for their impact, appeal and honesty, focusing in particular on how information about the product is presented: exaggerated claims, tactics for grabbing attention, linguistic devices. All the activities in 'What would you send him?' can help the students achieve this objective (19).

YEAR 5, TERM 1

To consider how texts can be rooted in the writer's experience. e.g. experience of wartime. The letters and poetry in 'Impressions of war' are good examples of men talking about their experiences of war (4).

To respond to shades of meaning to explain and justify personal tastes. All activities ask for the students to give their personal response (7).


YEAR 5, TERM 3

To write from another characters point of view (7). e.g. retelling an incident in letterform. 'Letters home' and 'What to send him for Easter' are activities that encourage students to empathise with various people.

Non-fiction

Reading comprehension

To read and evaluate letters e.g. from newspapers. 'Letters home' asks the students to think about the content of the letters and how people are feeling (12).

To read other examples e.g. newspaper comment, headlines, adverts (13).

  • How opinion can be disguised to seem like fact.

The workshop on censorship is a wonderful example of propaganda and how newspapers disguise the truth.

YEAR 6, TERM 1

To distinguish between fact, opinion and fiction in the censorship workshop (11).

To comment critically on the language and style of reports in all of the activities suggested in the Teachers' Zone (12).

Writing comprehension

To use IT to edit writing and to bring it to publication standard. All activities in the Children's Zone require the pupils to print off a finished outcome that they have edited (17).


YEAR 6, TERM 2

To recognise how poets manipulate words (3). 'Fought and fell' asks the students to look closely at the language and critique the poem.

YEAR 6, TERM 3

To describe and evaluate the style of an individual poet by looking at 'Fought and fell' (3).

To comment critically on the overall impact of a poem, showing how language and themes have been developed (4). This can be achieved by writing a critique of the poem 'Fought and fell' using a writing frame.

This can be achieved in the censorship workshop.
