Design
and display
This
activity is based on a workshop run at The British Library. It is designed
for half a class of students (15 pupils). However, it can be adapted for
a class of thirty-plus, providing you are able to get enough materials
such as boxes and religious books.
It encourages
children to look carefully at an exhibition that they visit on a class
trip with a view to recreating one in their classroom. They will focus
on design, conservation and interpretation issues.
The
subject is "Special Books", which is a popular R.E. topic in most Local
Education Authority syllabuses, and asks the students to focus on how
to look after and display a special book, taking into account the beliefs
and feelings of their peers.
The students will
learn about some of the religious books from the major world faiths and
will be asked to write and exhibit labels about a special book and then
display them and the book in an imaginative way.
