The
Hindu festival of Diwali
Diwali
is a festival about reflecting on ones life and renewing the good within
us all. Hostility is forgotten and families and friends meet to be in
close company. It teaches honour and how people can overcome the effects
of negative emotions such as jealously.
In the Diwali story, Rama and
Sita enter the village of Ayodhya after a fierce battle. To welcome their
return, the villagers of Ayodhya lit their houses with clay oil lamps.
Hindus
today celebrate this festival by lighting up their houses with lamps called
'Diva lamps' and setting off fireworks.
Over five days they welcome
the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Laxmi, into their homes by decorating
it with bright decorations and patterns made out of spices. Oil lamps
are lit to illuminate their homes. The lamps symbolise the victory of
good over evil and light over darkness, therefore are remembrances of
the origins of the festival.
