Let's do maps

A map is a wonderful way of looking and making sense of the environment we live in. Ordinance survey maps, street maps and cultural maps help to create an understanding of world geography. Every category of map is designed for a specific purpose and in isolation provides a limited view of an area. To have a deeper understanding of the geography of one's local area, it is important to have experience of many different types of maps.

This topic encourages children and teachers to develop their own understanding of the cultural and geographical world. Using three maps, from the 16th century, 19th and 20th centuries, children make comparisons and form opinions.
