Horn Book

This is a horn book, which was used during the Tudor period to help children learn to read. It is made out of wood and has a thin piece of shaved animal horn placed over the text.

Encouraging reluctant writers to display their work in a horn book would be an interesting method, as it would encourage children to write imaginatively without the burden of having to write a great deal. It would therefore make them think carefully about what they want to write. A horn book would be a useful way of displaying short stories, rules and poems. This project provides teachers with instructions on how to make a horn book and some activities to do with it.
