Scrolls

Many children associate scrolls with a decree being read out by a town crier from a story such as Cinderella. However, most scrolls are usually religious texts. Many ancient religions, such as Eastern religions and Judaism, have their spiritual writings on scrolls. The British Library has many examples.

This topic includes practical activities that can be completed at home or in the classroom. Examples of scrolls that have been made for a variety of purposes are pictured throughout this topic. These include a Hajj certificate and thanksgiving charm, as well as the more usual religious texts.
