Scrolls: Activity 1

Make a paper scroll with a holder

Follow the instructions below and use the image of the Hebrew scroll made out of parchment with an ivory case to help you with your design.

Try and use imaginative materials for your scroll such as home made paper, thick paper, or paper that has been rubbed for a while so that it is very soft. You can make paper soft by rubbing and using the heat from your fingers to make it pliable.

For the holder you could use kitchen roll or a potato crisp tube.

Instructions

Paper Scroll

1. Choose your materials very carefully and cut them to size.

2. Write your text on the paper if you wish. It may make it easier to do it now rather than when your scroll is finished.

3. Roll it around a pen so that it begins to roll naturally. Make sure you roll it so that the writing is facing you when it is pulled out and the blank side is on the outer edge of the curl.

Attach the right side with sticky tape or glue to a doweling rod or stick, this will act as the axle for the holder to move around.

Turn it to see if it rolls.

Holder

A. Make a slit in one side of the holder so that the paper can be fed through it.

B. Cover the holder in papier mache so that it becomes stiff. Leave to dry.

Make a lid and bottom for your holder out of card. Cover both of them in in papier mache. When they are dry carefully make a hole in the centre of each circle.

C. Feed the axle through the bottom first and then through the lid. Glue the lid in place. Make sure that the scroll is coming out through the side slit.

Now stick a lolly pop stick to the edge of the scroll that is outside the holder. This will become your pull.

Decorate your holder so that the glue or sticky tape can't be seen.

>> Test your scroll

Does it roll out of the holder when pulled by the lolly stick?

Does it roll back when you turn the axle?

If not, see what you can do to improve it.
